TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

Complaining is easy. Blaming is easy. Throwing rocks at the people doing the work is easy. Find a problem worth solving. Bring people together. Put your talents to work. Create a solution someone can actually use.

Lead.

Take responsibility. Set a direction, bring capable people together, and be accountable for the result.

Follow.

Back a worthwhile effort. Bring your skills, judgment, and reliability. Do the work you commit to doing.

Get out of the way.

If you won’t help, don’t become an impediment. Let the people willing to act get on with it.

Build it. Let people decide whether to use it.

We can’t force people to adopt a solution. We can take responsibility for creating a useful one, testing it, and making it available.

Choose a place to start.

01

Help one person precisely.

Ask what kind of help would ease their burden. Listen before deciding what they need. Choose one manageable action with their agreement.

03

Test an idea in the physical world.

Choose one prototype, process, or repair. Record the assumptions, observe the result, and decide what the next version should change.

The point is learning, not grandstanding.

State what you expected, what actually happened, and what would make you change your mind. Useful experience becomes knowledge someone else can build on.
